本片以冷静、压抑的手法记录了另一种真实的死亡。镜头下，这些死者逝去时都没有亲人在身旁，他们或是异乡人、或是独居人士、或是孤寡老人。他们的死亡没有悲伤、没有眼泪、没有葬礼，平静得就像他们从来不曾来过。有亲人的则尸体会被亲人领回，没有的则火化后放在一个小小的铁盒内。负责报告铁盒的部门每5年清理一次铁盒，将盒内的骨灰倒入一个大坑，连同铁盒一起埋葬。青烟飘起，他们就这样静静地离开这个曾经生活的地方。
